Updated 10-July-2026
In 2026, A-Level results are released on Thursday, 13 August, and GCSE results on Thursday, 20 August. Private candidates must collect their results directly from the exam centre where they sat their papers. If you are unhappy with your grades, act quickly: contact your exams officer immediately to request a Review of Marking (remark) or to explore November resit options.
The summer exams are officially over. The textbooks are packed away, and the intense revision sessions of May and June are a distant memory. However, for thousands of private candidates across the UK, July and August bring a different kind of anxiety: waiting for Results Day.
Being a private candidate—whether you are a home-educated student, a mature learner, or someone who retook an exam independently—means you do not have a traditional school's infrastructure to guide you through Results Day.
At Exam Centre London, we host thousands of private candidates every year. To help you navigate the anxiety and practicalities of August, we have put together this ultimate 2026 survival guide.
Mark these dates in your calendar. Results are strictly embargoed by the exam boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR) and cannot be released a minute earlier.
A-Level, AS-Level, and Level 3 Qualifications: Thursday, 13 August 2026 (From 8:00 AM)
GCSE, IGCSE, and Level 2 Qualifications: Thursday, 20 August 2026 (From 8:00 AM)
If you attended a traditional school, you would simply walk into the assembly hall to pick up an envelope. As a private candidate, the process requires a bit more coordination with your exam centre.
In-Person Collection: At Exam Centre London, candidates can collect their physical statement of results from 8:00 AM onwards. You must bring a valid photo ID (Passport or Driving Licence).
Nominated Person: If you are on holiday, you can nominate someone else to collect your results. They must bring a signed letter of authorization from you, alongside their own ID.
Email/Post: Most centres, including ours, offer the option to have results emailed or posted if requested in advance. Ensure your exams officer has your correct, current email address.
If you are an A-Level private candidate holding university offers, your morning actually starts online before you even collect your physical grades.
At around 8:00 AM on the 13th of August, the UCAS Hub will update. UCAS will not show you your exact A-Level grades, but it will show your university admission status:
Unconditional: Congratulations! Your firm choice has accepted you.
Unsuccessful: You did not meet the conditions of your firm or insurance choices, and you are now in Clearing.
If your status is Unsuccessful, you must go to your exam centre immediately to pick up your physical grades so you know exactly what you are working with for Clearing.
Missing your grades can feel devastating, but it is absolutely not the end of the road. Thousands of students find fantastic university places through UCAS Clearing every year.
Clearing is how universities fill empty spots on their courses.
How to navigate Clearing as a private candidate:
Check UCAS Hub to confirm you are in Clearing.
Use the UCAS search tool to find courses with vacancies that match your actual grades.
Pick up the phone. Do not wait. Call the universities directly. Have your UCAS ID, your exact A-Level grades, and your GCSE Maths and English grades written down in front of you.
Treat the phone call like a mini-interview. Be enthusiastic about the course.
Real Student Scenario: Sarah sat her A-Level Biology and Chemistry at Exam Centre London as a private candidate. She needed AAB for Dentistry but achieved ABB. While she missed her firm offer, she immediately used Clearing on results morning. By 11:00 AM, after calling three universities, she secured a place to study Biomedical Sciences—a degree she now loves, with a pathway to postgraduate Dentistry.
If you open your envelope and the grade is significantly lower than you expected, do not panic. As a private candidate, you have full access to the exam boards' Post-Results Services.
You must arrange these through your exam centre. At Exam Centre London, our Exams Officer will help you request the following:
Before demanding a remark, you can request a digital copy of your marked exam paper. This allows you or your private tutor to see exactly where you lost marks.
If you believe a marking error occurred, you can pay for a senior examiner to review your paper.
Priority Review: Available for A-Level students whose university place depends on a grade change. (Takes a few days).
Standard Review: For GCSE students or A-Level students not rushing for university. (Takes up to 20 days).
Warning: Grades can go down as well as up during a review. Only request a remark if you are very close to the upper grade boundary.
Sometimes, a remark is not enough, and the best option is to try again. If you missed out on a passing grade (Grade 4) in GCSE Maths or English, it is highly recommended to resit as soon as possible.
The November exam series is exclusively for GCSE Maths and English. Because the turnaround time between August Results Day and the November exams is very short, registration deadlines close in mid-September.
Do not delay. If you know you need to retake, you can secure your seat immediately via our Book an Exam portal. For more details on this, read our dedicated guide on November Resits.
To ensure a smooth morning at the exam centre, make sure you have your "Results Day Survival Kit" ready the night before:
Valid Photo ID (Passport, Provisional/Full Driving Licence). You will not get your results without this.
Candidate Number and Centre Number.
Fully charged phone (for calling universities or parents).
UCAS ID Number (if applying to university).
A notepad and pen (to write down Clearing offers or advice from the exams officer).
